2014 WAmmy Award Winners!

Congratulations to the 2014 WAmmy Award winners (for questions and answers posted in 2014)!  The WAmmy Awards are a fun way to recognize questions, answers, contributions, and hard work.  This community is truly amazing – and these awards are just a small token of our appreciation!!

Lifetime Achievement Award

Winner:
Skullcandy88

Acceptance Speech:
This WAmmy award came as a massive surprise. Thank you very much to those who felt I am worthy of this award and for voting for me.

I enjoy giving back to the Answers community in many ways. From assisting the contributors, helping fellow Supervisors, co-running The Initiates Program alongside Xnicola and Jsarino, mentoring new Supervisors and TIP members, kicking those vandals back out the door and so on.

I am proud of The Initiates Program, the work it does and the members of the program. Myself and Xnicola helped to build the program up from scratch, alongside a former Community Assistant, into the amazing program it is today. I am also proud of the community itself, especially the Supervisor community which puts so much work into making Answers the brilliant place it is. Kudos to every Supervisor on Answers.com, this community would not be possible without our awesome team of volunteers.

Special thanks goes to Stupid Little Genius for inspiring and encouraging me to become a Supervisor, Ganderton for inviting me onto the Supervisor team and Xnicola for mentoring (and putting up with) me.

The Lifetime Achievement is a big honour and one I didn’t expect to get, considering there are many fantastic Supervisors who deserve this award. Thank you again to everyone who voted.

Thank you all for this totally unexpected award.  Answering questions is a reward in itself, as it is great to spread knowledge.  To be noticed by your peers is an honour.  Everyone here deserves acknowledgement for what they do. So thanks for nominating me and thanks for all you do.  You are all winners.

Most Contributions

Winner:

Lifesnadir

Acceptance Speech:

Speech?  I’m wordless (quite unusual)– and a bit confused (not so unusual anymore LOL).  My wordless confusion is because I truly don’t keep track of how many or how much I contribute.  I even forget to turn in numbers to Robin for WikiReviewers’ missions.   I’m just not much into ‘keeping count’.  So any award for most contributions is extremely surprising—to me!

When visiting Answers, I just ‘do’ what I see needs done. One edit, one merge, checking one alt, leads me to another… and another.   I love tidying up and organizing.  But, there are always more edits to do!  I keep hoping to make even a small dent in one area…(temporarily, I forget how massive the Answers site has become).

I suppose I’m sort of like my cat when he endlessly chases his tail.  There’s a great satisfaction after a long round ‘n round ‘twirl’ through a chain of edits or alts.  Like my cat, I find myself doing another ‘twirl’…just because it’s there to do!   It’s hard to give an exact name to the feeling ‘twirling’ gives.  Looking at my cat after one of his blitzkrieg twirling dances, it’s very apparent that chasing one’s tail is simply quite pleasurable, for no other reason than the enjoyment of doing it.  Somehow the expenditure of thought and energy brings more than just tiredness at the end; it rejuvenates, before finding a soft spot to curl up and take a well-deserved nap.

Maybe Answers for the human brain is like catnip to a cat’s brain?  Or a mix of energizing epinephrine and soothing dopamine?  I asked my cat to share his wisdom on this, but he doesn’t seem to have any interest in answering “Why does chasing my tail ‘feel good’ to me?”  Perhaps like explaining a cat’s ‘midnight crazies’, there is no need to wax philosophical about why twirling on Answers produces this pleasurable effect.

I must say, though, I’m very glad that others focus on providing answers.  That gives me time for another editing ‘twirl’… and another…

I’d offer you a pinch of coveted catnip, but I think everyone deserves to have their own ‘stash’ so we can each do whatever kind of ‘twirling’ we most enjoy doing.  Come join me for the ‘midnight crazies’ or a long twirl on Answers.com!

Most Trust Points Earned

Winner:

Dabac

Acceptance Speech:

What, a year gone by already – nah, can’t be.
And me, again – now that really can’t be.
On the other hand, who am I to doubt the collected wisdom of Answers.com participants?
Or it just goes to show what a bit of restlessness can do for you – particularly when it sets in within wi-fi coverage…
Anyhow, thank you all for this vote of confidence.
I’ll do my best to continue in the same manner.

Cheers,
Dabac

Most Vandals Blocked

Winner:

Skullcandy88

Acceptance Speech:

Thank you very much for awarding me this WAmmy.

I would like to shout out to all the members of Vandal Patrol, an excellent anti-vandal team on Answers which is coordinated by An8thg. Every Vandal Patroller in the Answers community does an excellent job in identifying vandalism, cleaning up the vandalism, educating the vandals in the correct etiquette and permanently removing vandals from our fantastic community when they fail to take the education on board. Dealing with the bad apples that Vandal Patrol comes across requires a lot of patience and professionalism as well as the ability to work in a team. And everyone in the program does that brilliantly.

For some reason, certain immature individuals like to turn up and rain down on this fantastic community. Certain others believe they can do whatever they like in other people’s communities and blindly spam them with unwanted material. But they will very soon realise that Answers.com has the best anti-vandalism team in the online world. Hats off to my fellow Vandal Patrollers.

Watch out vandals.

Most Reverts

Winner:

Dfoofnik

Acceptance Speech:

The hardest thing about reverting some answers is finding the best answer, as the answer to a popular or controversial question may have been vandalized multiple times. Fortunately, the vast majority of reverts were to new questions, or were first answers by IP’s. Unfortunately, some IP’s made a LOT of bad answers- I found more than most people ever want to find. I appreciate the somewhat belated award.

Best How-To Answer

Winner/Question:

Doditov

How do you become great?

Acceptance Speech:

To all those who voted for this answer, my grateful thanks. While I do not contribute as much these days, I do enjoy answering the unusual and quirky questions…and sometimes it pays off. To the inquiring mind, “how to” always leads to greater understanding of a subject, even philosophy!  Always keep questing for excellence, tilting at windmills, and occasionally…very occasionally…the wild and wonderful happens. Strive for greatness!!

Best Researched Answer

Winner/Question:

Skullcandy88

Why are a majority of ancient swords found in river beds?

Acceptance Speech:

Thank you very much for nominating me for the Best Researched Answer WAmmy.

I am glad that people have found the answer helpful. I enjoy researching topics to provide an accurate-as-possible answer, especially with history topics, which is difficult these days with so much outdated, conflicting and incorrect information floating about.

Thank you again.

Funniest Answer

Winner/Question:

Skullcandy88

What does it mean when a British person says “bite your arm off”?

Acceptance Speech:

Wow, I am gobsmacked (in awe). I was not expecting to win this WAmmy as I am usually an unfunny person, so that was very jammy (lucky). But now I am so excited to have won it that I could bite your arm off!

Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this nomination. You must be off your trolley (crazy/nuts), but thank you. I hope it at least put a jolly good smile on the faces of some people.

Any road (anyway), I’ll let you go. Pip pip cheerio (goodbye).

When the compiler of crossword puzzles dies would he be buried six down and three across?

Thank you very much for your votes, this is the second WAmmy I’ve won for funniest question (I won in 2007 too!) I guess my funny bone must be connected to my chuckle muscle 🙂
