Meet Lindaloulou: Lass from Yorkshire

Yorkshire, England
Yorkshire, England

In one short year Lindaloulou has had some impressive accomplishments on our site: she became a Silver Contributor – though she is already on her way to becoming a Gold Contributor with over 15,000 contributions. She is a TIP graduate, having passed through all the TIP missions with flying colors. Her success with TIP made her a Supervisor. You will frequently find her sending out friendly greetings as a Community Outreach Wikiguide. This Yorkshire lass is proud of her English heritage and with her expertise in Nursing, she makes valuable and informative contributions to the site. Read more and get to know Lindaloulou!

What is your first name?  Linda

What is your occupation?

I am a Senior Nursing Health Care Assistant Practitioner working in Palliative Care.

What is your username and how did it come about?

My username is Lindaloulou. Whilst I was looking after my friend’s children, I made up a story and called one of the characters ‘ Loopy Lou’ The Rabbit. The next time I saw the children they came running up calling ‘Hello, Lindaloulou’ and asked for more stories. Although the children have grown, they still call me Auntie Loulou.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?Beach huts on the North Yorkshire coast

I am a “Yorkshire Lass Born and Bred” and proud of it. Yorkshire, England is a county full of beautiful scenery and landscapes from rolling hills to sunny beaches. What makes it special to me is that it holds all my family history.

How did you discover

I found like many other members. I was researching a project for work and the site kept coming up at the top of the Google search page. Eventually I had to take a look. I found an unanswered question I could answer, then another and I was hooked.

What enticed you to join our community?

Every time I switched the computer on I found myself checking out the site so I joined. It was addictive!

What is your favorite thing to do on

I love to answer questions. I enjoy researching the answers because it gives me an excuse to learn and update my knowledge and to provide informative and unbiased answers. I also love to help people.

If you were inviting someone to join, what reason would you give that person to become a part of our community?

You gain great satisfaction from answering questions and helping others. There are also many other things to do: for example supervising and mentoring. The site also gives you the chance to meet people from around the world.

What accomplishments on are you proud of?

I have only been a member of the team for around a year and – in that space of time – I have reached 10,000 contributions and become a Supervisor with the expert tuition of my fantastic mentor Skullcandy88.

What is the most daring thing you’ve ever done?Pot Holing

I went pot holing (a sport practiced by exploring local caves) in the Derbyshire Dales just to impress a boyfriend.

Do you view the glass ‘half full’ or ‘half empty’?

I view the glass as being “half full.” Why? Because I am an optimistic sort of person. I don’t believe I could do my job if I viewed things the other way round.

You can only pick one:  banjo, butterfly, or babbling brook. Which would you choose and why?

I would choose the babbling brook because I think that represents my life the best. As the sun shines, it is full of sparkle as it trickles and flows over the stony ground, but it also has its dark muddy times. It is forever gurgling as it meanders along its life path, or gushing as it forces its way past obstacles nature placed in its way.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

I love to read and will read anything and everything. At the moment I’m reading Revelation by C.J.Sansom. I believe a book should be a book not a ‘tablet.’ There is nothing like curling up with a good book,a mug of steaming coffee or tea and then turning the pages. I also think that once opened, the book should be read from cover to cover, not begun and left unfinished.

What are you most passionate about in your life?

My family and my two dogs: an Irish Setter called Murphy, and an Italian Spinone called Maximus.

Galápagos Islands
Galápagos Islands

Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?

I would love to visit the Galápagos Islands because they are one of the last unspoilt regions of the world. I would love to see their dramatic scenery and wildlife and explore the islands, just like Charles Darwin did when he first set foot there.

What is one quirky or interesting random fact about you that most people may not know?

Once I start something I have to finish it – however long it takes, and it has got to be done well.

Meet SummerMaple: Veterinarian from Nebraska!

SummerMaple, such a fitting name for this time of year!  She now has more than 27,000 contributions since starting on the site in 2010 and she was an AnswerThon runner up.  This very knowledgeable contributor from Nebraska is a veterinarian who works for the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. She is an excellent Category Supervisor for Veterinary Medicine who truly improves the quality of information on our site.  Not only does she work in the field, but SummerMaple also raises her own steer, pigs, chickens and turkeys!  Her hobbies include cross-stitching, quilting, and doing word and logic puzzles.  Read more and get to know SummerMaple.

What is your first name? My first name is Jessica.

foodinspectionWhat is your occupation?

I am a public health veterinarian and food safety inspector.

How did you discover

I found the website through a random search result a couple of years ago. I started answering some of the questions in Veterinary Medicine and have been hooked ever since.

What enticed you to join our community?

I liked having the opportunity to really connect with people and have respectful conversations back and forth about topics.  By investing time in one category, I’m able to see how others update or view my answers, and I usually end up learning more about how non-veterinarians see issues and problems.

What is your favorite thing to do on

I like to finish reviewing a page of answers in my category (Veterinary Medicine) and feel comfortable that the questions belong in the category and the answers are accurate and balanced.  It takes 2-3 weeks for me to make it through one page, but I’ve managed to clean out a lot of bad answers.  That includes: gibberish, disrespectful posts, not answering the questions, wrong or outdated information and more.

What accomplishments on are you proud of?

I’m getting very close to having 27,000 contributions which will make me very happy.  I also came in as a runner-up in a previous AnswerThon, which was a complete surprise.  I was just working on questions in my spare time during the AnswerThon.

Who is your favorite poet?   shel-silverstein

My favorite poet is Shel Silverstein because he has such a range of work published for young people and adults. Take a look at The Devil and Billy Markham, one of Silverstein’s books for grown-ups.

Raven3What is your favorite poem and why?

My favorite poem is The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe because it’s such a powerful poem to hear recited aloud. A skilled orator could bring a room of teenagers on the last day before summer break to a respectful silence with this poem.

Do you view the glass ‘half full’ or ‘half empty’?

I view ‘the glass’ as having sufficient reserve capacity to be assured of handling the anticipated volume, mostly because I’m a government employee.

You can only pick one:  banjo, butterfly, or babbling brook.  Which would you choose and why? babbrook

I would choose a babbling brook because I love the sound of running water and find it very soothing.

What do you find most challenging as an Supervisor

The hardest part to me is to find the balance between preserving credit for a good answer and merging questions that need to be merged.  I often find a really good answer to a poorly written question (bad grammar, misspellings, etc) and it’s hard to keep the author information intact for that good answer after cleaning up the question and merging it into another question.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

Outside of Answers, I spend a lot of time on

It’s a virtual pet site with the added bonus of having accurate animal and health information and a mission to support animal rescue groups with their profits.  Shameless self-promotion: if someone makes an account on PowerPets, can you put me (SummerMaple) down as the person who recommended you?  It’ll get me closer to completing a conquest on the site.

What is one quirky or interesting random fact about you that most people may not know?

In my professional life I tend to be very diplomatic and sensitive to others’ emotions and beliefs.  To vent my spleen after almost always being considerate, I play Diablo III and prefer the Barbarian and Monk because they are the toe-to-toe hack-and-slash characters.
